Properties and Applications of Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN) Powder
April 03, 2025
Cubic boron nitride (CBN) powder is a synthetic superhard material, second only to diamond in hardness. It is chemically and thermally stable, making it an excellent choice for high-performance industrial applications, particularly in machining and abrasives. What Is Cubic Boron Nitride Powder? CBN is a crystalline form of boron nitride (BN) with a cubic structure, similar to diamond. Unlike hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), which is soft and lubricious, CBN is extremely hard and wear-resistant. It is produced under high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) conditions, much like synthetic diamonds. Key Properties of CBN Powder – Exceptional Hardness (≈ 4,500 HV) – Nearly as hard as diamond but more thermally stable. – High Thermal Stability – Resists oxidation up to 1,400°C (compared to diamond, which degrades around 800°C). – Chemical Inertness – Does not react with iron, nickel, or other ferrous metals, unlike diamond. – Excellent Thermal Conductivity – Helps dissipate heat in cutting and grinding applications. Applications of CBN Powder Due to its superior properties, CBN powder is widely used in: 1. Precision Machining & Cutting Tools – Ideal for grinding and cutting hardened steels, superalloys (e.g., Inconel, titanium), and other difficult-to-machine materials. – Used in CBN-coated grinding wheels and inserts for lathes...
